Patrice Roland offers snapshots, paintings in which time is captive, and leaves it to our eyes to recompose the past and the future.

Almost naive colors and shapes, figurative art, immersive without overwhelming, it evokes, seeks the resonance of our intimate and personal imaginations. Faced with the subject, the faces fade away, the atmosphere prevails and is often part of the details of moods and sets. The artist draws his inspiration from photos of families and vacations, universal sources of a moment not yet completely faded that it is up to us to re-emerge.

Never standardized, its models and references are presented in a single table. A singularity of approach that can be found even in the sourcing of its materials, canvases, boards, and paintings being most often recycled from other workshops and schools.

ABOUT ME

Originally from Brittany, I've been living and working in Paris for several years. I began my artistic research as an author, composer and performer by composing music. A little later, I moved into the visual arts, editing video clips, reusing old images that I rework according to the emotions that the sounds bring me.It was during a visit to the Guggenheim Foundation in Venice in 2014 that my desire to paint was born. Back in Paris, I unearthed some canvases and an old paint case I'd been given, and set about creating my first two paintings. As Anatole France said, "In art, as in love, instinct is enough", I don't like to learn or train, but rather to experiment by doing, and I decided to immerse myself in painting, testing several techniques and mediums and developing my own aesthetic over the years. I draw my inspiration from drawing, from moments captured on my travels or in my daily life. Initially attracted by geometric shapes and colors, I later wanted my paintings to reflect a contemporary reality and bear witness to a moment in life, a friendship, a family lunch, an early morning wake-up call... Other, more abstract paintings represent more raw emotions and are more open to interpretation.
I usually paint to music, which influences my lines and colors. It's the present moment, the music plunges me into an emotion that pushes me to play with the material but above all the colors. They intermingle to create form, sometimes movement. Lines are in tune and out of tune, accidents sometimes give way to unexpected surprises, and that's what I like best. I like to have an idea in my head and then not follow it, even if sometimes doubt takes hold of me, I wait to be surprised at the end.
If I had to sum up what drives me to create today, it's the search for emotion. Whether it's the desire to combine colors, play with materials, create a piece of music or take a photo, it's the immediacy that comes first! I don't intellectualize my creative process and I don't think about the objective or how it will be received by the public. In fact, it's rather contrary to my character: I no longer have the choice to make choices, I leave out superfluous details to express spontaneously feelings I can't put into words.
